2017 Head-Coaching Hire Analysis: First-Year Head Coaches

So the head-coaching openings for the 2017 season are filled. There were 21 job changes in all, though we should acknowledge that in the past few years there have been changes well outside the traditional window for hiring and firing (Bobby Petrino at Arkansas, Tim Beckman at Illinois and Art Briles at Baylor, just to name a few). So we can’t rule out a job change before the season starts…

The Heisman Top 25: The Finalists Will Be …

So here we go. The Heisman Trophy finalists will be announced early this week. This is always the tough part. You have a full season of games to look at and you find there are plenty of deserving players. Now it’s time to predict who will get to the ceremony in New York City. So a couple of factors to consider. First, there are always three Heisman finalists. Those are…

The Heisman Top 25 (November 29)

In my opinion, Lamar Jackson of Louisville remains the Heisman Trophy front-runner. But how tight is his grip on the award at this point? His numbers are among the best in the nation. Only Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes has more total offense than Jackson. Jackson compiled nearly 5,000 total yards and 51 total touchdowns this season. But his last opportunity to make a case on the field was Saturday against…

The Heisman Top 25: November 25, 2016

So how much did Louisville’s loss to Houston last week hurt Cardinals QB Lamar Jackson and his Heisman candidacy? I’d venture to say not too much. Earlier this week Jackson was revealed to be a finalist for every quarterback award he’s eligible for this season. Granted some of those ballots may have been cast before the Houston game. But that’s impressive all the same. Houston certainly found a way to…

The Heisman Top 25: November 17

I was at the Colorado-Arizona game last weekend when I saw the flash that Louisville was down two points going into the fourth quarter. I thought, perhaps, the door to usurping Lamar Jackson’s front-runner status for the Heisman might come ajar. Turns out not so much. Louisville won the game, 44-12, with an enormous fourth quarter. When I caught up with Jackson’s stat line after the game, it was clear…
