DALLAS — Statement made.

Prairie View A&M rode a fast start to a 22-16 win over rival Grambling State in the 93rd edition of the State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl. The victory snapped the Tigers’ 26-game Southwest Athletic Conference winning streak. It was also PVAMU’s first win over GSU since 2013.

The Panthers (3-3, 2-0) scored 22 of the first 24 points of the game before the Tigers (1-3, 1-1) came roaring back.

With apologies to the PVAMU Marching Storm and the Grambling Tiger Marching Band, PVAMU quarterback Jalen Morton stole the show. The Arlington, Texas, redshirt junior threw for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for 62 yards on 13 attempts. Panthers running back Dawonya Tucker added 72 yards on 19 carries.

PVAMU’s defense held up its end of the bargain with a whopping 10 sacks. TyQuan Fields led the way in tackles with 9, while Willie Green had 8 tackles, including 2.5 sacks.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Jeremy Hickbottom accounted for both Grambling touchdowns. He scored on a 3-yard run and threw an 18-yard TD pass to Quintin Guice to cut the lead to six with 3:34 left in the game.

After GSU recovered the ensuing onside kick, Ju’Anthony Parker intercepted a Hickbottom pass with 1:48 remaining, allowing the Panthers to run out the clock.

Following a bye week, PVAMU returns to SWAC play at home against Southern on Oct. 13, while GSU hosts Oklahoma Panhandle State on Oct. 6.
