The FBS Coaching Carousel (11/25/2015)

College Football America returns to the FBS Coaching Carousel to update you on changes since our last update on Nov. 18: Iowa State parted ways with Paul Rhoads and Syracuse fired Scott Shafer.

Iowa State - Paul Rhoads
Iowa State’s Rhoads

The Rhoads firing is interesting in that he had several years left on a contract extension and the Cyclones are on the hook for that. But Rhoads hasn’t had a winning season since 2009 and hasn’t gone to a bowl since 2012. The Cyclones have blown several leads against Big 12 teams this year, the last coming on Saturday against Kansas State.

The impression is that Rhoads has underachieved, and he’ll be on the sideline on Saturday for the finale against West Virginia. ISU will either go the rising assistant route (think Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley) or a “Group of 5” up-and-comer like Georgia Southern’s Willie Fritz.

Don’t be fooled — this is one of the hardest jobs in the country.

Syracuse - Scott Shafer
Syracuse’s Shafer

Shafer felt like an odd hiring from the start, elevated from assistant coach to head coach after Doug Marrone left for the Buffalo Bills.

He won seven games in year one, but won just three last year and is in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. His tenure has been bumpy, with quarterback injuries and issues with assistant coaches.

This would be a good place for another up-and-coming FCS or Group of 5 FBS coach. The tradition is there.

ULM - Todd Berry
ULM’s Todd Berry

ULM let Todd Berry go on Nov. 14.

A former head coach at Illinois State and Army before going to ULM in 2010, he got the Warhawks into a bowl game in 2012, as they went 8-5 and lost in the Independence Bowl. That was the program’s high-water mark under Berry, as they recorded a .500 season in 2013 and two losing seasons after that.

In 2015 the Warhawks won one game under Berry, and that was enough for the administration. A rising star assistant coach or an FCS coach seems likely here. Might the Warhawks take a look at McNeese State’s Matt Viator, who has guided the Cowboys to an undefeated season down in Lake Charles, La.?

So we’re up to 13 open coaching positions on the 2015 FBS Coaching Carousel (the Minnesota position is already filled). Be sure to check out our Hot Seat Coaches and Hot Coaching Names articles here at RoadTripSports.com and College Football America.
