College Football America Week 9 Preview

The College Football America Yearbook will be on the road as usual Saturday with a full slate of college games in Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

North Carolina at Pittsburgh
7 p.m. ET Thursday, October 29, 2015
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

CFA Editor-in-Chief Matthew Postins actually got the week started for us in the Steel City where the North Carolina Tar Heels faced off against the Pittsburgh Panthers. Both teams were 6-1 entering the game hanging on to slim playoff hopes, but in the end, the visitors from Carolina left town with a 26-19 win.

Down South, CFA Publisher Kendall Webb was on-hand with CFA associate photographers Wally Hall and Danny Van Dyke for some high school action when Alabama’s No. 2 Muscle Shoals (AL) Trojans took on Buckhorn (New Market, AL). The host Bucks trailed just 6-0 right before the half, but then the Trojans blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to make it 14-0. They would eventually roll to a 28-0 victory.

West Memphis (AR) at North Little Rock (AR)
AAA (Arkansas High School Football)

North Little Rock, Arkansas

Friday night we paid a visit to the Little Rock area where Publisher Webb took in the first half of West Memphis (AR) at North Little Rock (AR). The visiting Blue Devils were no match for the Charging Wildcats who won their third straight game at their beautiful new stadium after dropping the first three at the facility early in the season.

Then it was on to legendary War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock where the Catholic (Little Rock, AR) Trojans played host to the state’s top-ranked Greenwood (AR) Bulldogs. The visitors lived up to their billing dominating the Trojans in the first half, and then holding on in the second half for a comfortable 42-21 victory.

Illinois at Penn State
12 noon ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
University Park, Pennsylvania

Editor-in-Chief Postins will be on hand for this Big Ten battle in our first trip to State College and University Park to see the Nittany Lions at home. The visiting Illini are 4-3 – a respectable result after losing head coach Tim Beckman just prior to the start of the season – but they’ll be hard-pressed to beat James Franklin’s 6-2 Lions on the road today.

Rutgers at Wisconsin
12 noon ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
Madison, Wisconsin

Associate publisher Chuck Cox, meanwhile, is in Madison, Wisconsin, for our first trip to see the Badgers at home. The hosts are 6-2 and shouldn’t have much trouble today with a 3-4 Rutgers team coming to town.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Wisconsin-Whitewater
2 p.m. ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
Whitewater, Wisconsin

It hasn’t been the typical unblemished regular season for the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, but they’re hanging around at No. 7 despite a loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh earlier this season and close calls against Morningside and Wisconsin-Stevens Point. At 6-1, they’ll relish this opportunity to straighten some things out against 0-7 Eau Claire.

PUBLISHER’S PICK: Wisconsin-Whitewater

Oklahoma Baptist at Ouachita Baptist
2 p.m. ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
Arkadelphia, Arkansas

The Oklahoma Baptist Bison (2-6) should be just what the Ouachita Baptist Tigers (5-3) need to stay in the Great American Conference race for at least one more week. There are currently seven GAC teams standing at 5-3 or better with the Tigers’ rivals from Henderson State leading the way at 7-1.

PUBLISHER’S PICK: Ouachita Baptist

Southern Nazarene at Henderson State
3 p.m. ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
Arkadelphia, Arkansas

Just across the street from Ouachita Baptist, the Henderson State Reddies (7-1) will play host to the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm (0-8). It should be an easy win for the Reddies keeping them on track toward a possible GAC championship.

PUBLISHER’S PICK: Henderson State

Rhodes at Hendrix
7 p.m. ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
Conway, Arkansas

At 5-2, the Hendrix Warriors are on pace for a possible league championship in just their third year as a program. They are 4-1 in the Southern Athletic Association standings and should have the better team Saturday when the Rhodes Lynx (4-3, 2-3) pay a visit.

Southeastern Louisiana at Central Arkansas
8 p.m. ET Saturday, October 31, 2015
Conway, Arkansas

This should be an entertaining Southland Conference contest as both teams enter the game at 4-3. The visiting Lions are only 3-2 in conference play, however, and desperate for a win to stay in the league title hunt. Central Arkansas is technically in third place in league play at 4-1, but tied with Sam Houston State (5-1) in the loss column. Both are chasing undefeated McNeese State (7-0 overall/6-0 in league play) so a win is just as crucial to the hosts in this one.

PUBLISHER’S PICK: Central Arkansas
